Security and privacy control catalog / Revision 5, Release 5.2.0 (27 August 2025)

NIST SP 800-53

NIST Special Publication 800-53 Revision 5 is a broad catalog of security and privacy controls for information systems and organizations. Release 5.2.0, noted by NIST on 27 August 2025, updates the catalog, including software update and patch reliability related controls. Companion publications SP 800-53A (assessment procedures) and SP 800-53B (control baselines) are how selection and assessment are typically discussed. It is a catalog to select and tailor from, not a single mandatory list for every private company.

What it helps you do

Provide a detailed control vocabulary when an organization, often in or serving U.S. federal contexts, must select, tailor, and assess controls. Useful as a reference when CSF outcomes need more specific control language, including patch reliability.

A useful way to begin

  1. Identify whether you actually have a 800-53 obligation or are only borrowing language.
  2. If you are selecting controls, use 800-53B baselines and 800-53A assessment procedures as companions.
  3. Pay attention to update/patch reliability language in Release 5.2.0 when documenting the VPN queue.
  4. Record the exact revision and release in every mapping so nobody cites an older set by accident.

What evidence could look like

  • A control-selection table that cites Revision 5 Release 5.2.0 and names tailoring decisions.
  • Assessment records following 800-53A procedures for the few controls you actually claim.
